Spirit of the Rainforest / 2018
A vibrant series from a profound immersion and years of living in the Amazon Rainforest alongside the resilient and talented Yawanawa family. As she served as a teacher of painting and art for the youth, Delfina became a student of the Yawanawa's ancient tradition of chants and melodies. This series is colored with the lush greens of the rainforest, the vibrant reds of urucum, and the deep blacks of jenipapo, the indigenous natural body paints.
Amidst the magnificent presence of the 'Samauma,' one of the world's largest trees, these visions delve into the timeless traditions of Yawanawa chants and the mesmerizing 'Shenipahu' oral stories, with ancestral symbols that appear subtly in these paintings, as well as the ‘Kênê’, sacred geometric emblems that materialize spiritual strength in visual forms.
These creations helped to fund three art workshops at the Yawanawa Sacred Village, where different painting techniques came together through the creative Yawanawa artists, birthing new art pieces and supporting the continuity of this beautiful indigenous culture.
